SURPRISINGLY VERSATILE FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT OPTIONS - WHETHER STUDENTS ARE VIRTUAL OR FACE-TO-FACE

I have to admit, I’ve felt a bit like a kid in a candy store the last couple of months as I explored all the new (or new to me!) free sites swirling around. Just when I feel I have a sense of what is out there, a teacher will say, “Have you ever heard of…?”

We are all on the hunt for assessment sites that are a match for our students and offer flexibility between both virtual and face-to-face environments. And, there are bonus points if those same assessments can be used simultaneously with our virtual and face-to-face students.

Today, I want to share two sites with you that offer the best of both worlds.

Meet Jamboard and Padlet.

JAMBOARD

In Jamboard, you have sticky notes, drawing options, and the ability to add visuals. It then becomes a big white board that you and your students can interact with by adding and moving objects around. And, the opportunities become almost limitless. For some primary grades ideas, check out Empowering Our Littlest Learners. Or, for options in upper grades, take a look at EdTechEmma’s list of options.

My favorite part is that students can be working in the classroom alongside those working virtually, building the classroom community.

PADLET

With Padlet, you are provided an online virtual “bulletin board”, where students and teachers can collaborate, reflect, share links and pictures, in a secure location. It’s been around for a while, and there are countless resources for you to investigate. I would start by checking out this article on 30 Creative Ways to Use Padlet for Teachers and Students. I would also recommend going to YouTube and doing a search on Padlet and its uses in your specific grade level or content area. You might be surprised at what you find!

Again, it’s a community builder allowing for connection with students who are virtual and face-to-face.

If you have a few minutes, check these out. You will be glad you did! Formative assessment still matters as much as ever, and when we can find options that work for ALL of our students, it’s a win! Wishing you all the best! Stay healthy friends!
