HOW TO HAVE THE PERFECT STUDENT LED DISCUSSION
Okay, maybe it's not perfect.
But, I do believe this strategy truly helps. It's simple and yet holds students accountable.
Years ago one of my good friends shared a story about how her daughter's teacher had implemented something called talking chips so that she would no longer dominate the classroom conversation. This sweet girl was given two chips to use during class discussions to encourage her to carefully consider her comments before her hand shot up. With quick success, the teacher saw the beauty of talking chips and decided to use it with all students.
I've used this strategy many times since in the classroom, and i always am amazed by what a thoughtful, focused conversation it produces.
Here are the 3 simple steps to using talking chips:
ONE Present a question or topic for discussion.
TWO Provide students2 chips each. I usually have baggies prepared of 8 chips.
THREE Students take turns speaking. They may only speak once their chip has been placed in the middle. Once their chips are used, they are a listener.
Of course, you could adapt this easily for a longer discussion by providing more chips. Also, in the beginning I usually am more lenient and don't require all chips to be used as students acclimate to the process. For your quiet students, using all their chips in the beginning can be a challenge.
And, here's a pro tip. You can buy poker chips at the dollar store! Grab some baggies, and you could easily have this ready to go when school starts!
