A GAME CHANGER IN FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT || PART 2
I recently presented a workshop on the topic of exit tickets, so with my mind still flooded with thoughts on the topic, I thought I would share a few more ways to use exit tickets.
ENTRANCE
This turns the idea of the exit ticket upside down. Instead of assessing at the end of class, have your warm up for the day be an entrance ticket. This would, of course, require some quick reviewing of the responses and some plans in place to respond to the data you receive. But, ultimately, this could be a more accurate assessment since kids have had the time to sleep on it. You have a more real sense of what has been retained.
ORAL
Imagine your kids sharing with you an answer to a question as they leave the classroom. I know, it sounds like a cop out for you and the students. But, there is one great benefit to this, and it probably isn't accurate assessment. Students are likely hearing and repeating the same response(s) over and over. You guessed it, it builds retention.
SUM IT UP
The picture tells the story here. But, I love the fact that students are succinctly summing up their learning. You could quickly read through these and identify who walked away with the day's big idea/objective and who did not.
DIGITAL
You just say online, and your students are ready to go. Since it is such a motivator, why not put it in the mix with exit tickets. There are a variety of free sites that you can use. Take a look at this link for a listing of 10 of the most popular options.
I think I have completed my brain dump on exit tickets for now. If you didn't get a chance to read the first post on exit tickets, you can read it here. There are countless other ways to make this happen. Just a quick trip to Pinterest can give you a taste of others.
In the end, my question to you would be this, if you aren't using exit tickets, what are you using to ensure you are getting the data you need to inform your instruction each day?
