5 TIPS FOR SPRING CLEANING YOUR CLASSROOM

Spring is in the air!  And, just as our home need a bit of tidying and sprucing up, our classroom deserves the same attention.  Chances are you are staring down stacks of homeless paper and random crayon parts at this point, and let's be honest, you spend countless hours in this space.

So, here's my top five tips for showing your classroom a little love.

1. Purge

Every professional organizer swears by it.  Create three sections: keep, trash, donate.  And, the keep pile should be only items that you truly need or love.  That's it.  This is tough for some of us, but clearing the clutter can give you a fresh perspective.  If you have a friend who likes to purge, you might invite them to this party.  Take art supplies that aren't needed to the art teacher.  Do you have books to part with? There is likely a teacher down the hall who can't wait to take them off your hands!

2. Organize

This may seem like a daunting task.  But, even if you take on ONE area, you are better off than you were before. Take the time to do it right.  Think about what the area needs to function best.  Everything needs a home.  Do you need supplies?  Containers?   This is where a trip to the dollar store or thrift shop comes in handy.  And, maybe its just me, but I think containers that match are just much nicer to look at.

3.  Enlist helpers

You know you have a class or classes full of them.  While we can't necessarily carve out class time for this, how about inviting some kiddos before or after school to assist? They can save you countless hours of time.  Make a list of tasks to be tackled.  Put on some music and provide a snack, and you will be in business!

4. Rearrange

Give your room a fresh look.  Sometimes something as simple as rearranging student desks or moving yours can make all the difference.  Again, this is a great time to invite a friend or neighbor from down the hall to lend an opinion.  They might have a vision for your classroom that you had never considered. You might also consider flexible seating options.  You can check out my recent post here.

5.  Add something that makes you smile.

This might be a new sign or poster.  It might be a brightly painted stool or even a glam, gold stapler!  It's sometimes the little things that make your classroom feel special and more like you.

So, yes, this will take some effort, but I promise it is worth it!   You will be reinvigorated and ready to take on the remainder of the school year.  And, the kids will also appreciate the new view.
